Pilates is a system of body conditioning that develops strength, flexibility, and balance. The Pilates system, consisting of exercises performed on specially designed apparatuses and the mat, can be safe and effective for everyone.
Joseph Pilates created the method that he called “Contrology” over 80 years ago. Influenced by his deep knowledge of anatomy and movement, his method became renowned among famous athletes, dancers, opera singers, models, and actors. Joseph taught his method at his New York City studio alongside his wife, Clara; his chosen protégé, Romana Kryzanowska; and several of his trusted mentees. After Joseph’s death in 1967, Clara and Romana ran his studio together. When Clara passed away, the studio was left to Romana. She and her daughter, Sari Mejia Santo, who also trained with Joseph and Clara Pilates, preserved the Pilates legacy by passing down their knowledge to students and teachers around the world.
Pilates Haven is proud to be bringing a part of this heritage to New Haven. All of our instructors certified through Romana’s Pilates under Romana Kryzanowska and/or Sari Mejia Santo. In the Pilates Haven instructor’s time in the demanding 800-hour certification program, they worked on apparatuses built by Joseph Pilates himself and learned how to take an individualized approach to teaching the exercises to each client. Our teachers regularly study with master teachers and take frequent continuing education workshops.
